M. Night Shyamalan and Slumgdog Millionaire star Dev Patel will work together on The Last Airbender, a live-action film based on a Nickelodeon TV show. Paramount and Nickelodeon Films will distribute and finance the film.
The film is set to begin shooting in Greenland next month. Noah Ringer, a newcomer to Hollywood, will star in the film as Aang, as 12-year-old who tries to restore order to a world devoured by chaos thanks to his ability to manipulate air. Ringer was discovered via an online audition that the director set up for the part. Apparently, Ringer, who hails from Texas, impressed Shyamalan with his martial arts skills, which he demonstrated in his video.
Patel is taking over for singer Jesse McCartney, who was set to star in the film but had to drop out due to touring commitments. McCartney's touring schedule conflicted with a "boot camp" that Shyamalan holds for all of his films, where the stars have to do things like martial arts training. Patel will play Zuko, a member of the Fire Nation, which plans to enslave the Water, Earth, and Air nations. Jackson Rathbone of Twilight fame will also star in The Last Airbender, which has a July 2, 2010 release date attached.
