M Ward More Rain out March 4 on Merge Records

In his new video for "Girl From Conejo Valley," M. Ward ventures out to the namesake California valley, name-checks a handful of convicts along with an "old girlfriend," and shows us an omnipotent white rabbit with glowing red eyes. It's a whimsical, loose collage of imagery, though Conejo means rabbit, so splice together whatever meaning you can from that. Ward's press folks are saying the track is "a nostalgic trot through people he used to know and a place he used to be."

"Girl From Conejo Valley" will appear on Ward's eighth solo album, More Rain, soon to be released March 4 on Ward's long standing label Merge Records. The song is classic M. Ward, with a shuffling rhythm, reverb-y vocals, and that dreamy guitar, though the tune comes off more playful than some of his more self-serious offerings. And it works; at a recent Seattle show, the front man recently introduced "my new band," an ensemble of some of his hometown of Portland, Oregon's finest players, including Scott McCaughey on bass, and there's a sense he might be ready to move into a more free-spirited realm.

The new album features guest vocals from Neko Case, the Secret Sisters, and k.d. lang, as well as contributions from Peter Buck, Mike Coykendall, Mike Mogis, and more from the close-knit Portland music community.

Ward said this about the new album: "I think one of the biggest mysteries of America right now is this: How are we able to process unending bad news on Page One and then go about our lives the way the style section portrays us? There must be a place in our brains that allows us to take a bird's-eye view of humanity, and I think music is good at helping people—myself included—go to that place."

More Rain is available for pre-order now via Merge Records; the first 750 preorders will receive limited-edition translucent red vinyl.
