M. Ward Talks Purity Of Essence And Hopes For 'More Rain'

Portland, Oregon-based M. Ward has just released his eighth studio album, More Rain, via his longtime label Merge Records. When creating a record, the singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer looks to weave together old records with that of his current emotions, and past and present landscapes. It’s a method he has refined over the years that has earned him the reputation of being a perfectionist of incredible focus.
It’s been over a decade and a half since Ward released his critically acclaimed debut album, Duets For Guitars #2. He has worked with a number of collaborators, and has been involved in a series of projects with a spectrum of artists from R.E.M.s Peter Buck to his duo with Zooey Deschanel as She & Him. However, he’s not an artist to go changing his ways; the man retains his singular vision, and spends all of his concentration on creating and recording in the studio, adding consistency of tone and approach to his craft.
ARTISTdirect’s Christopher Friedmann caught with M. Ward to discuss More Rain, the power of music, and why he doesn’t care for interviews.
