    Martin Scorsese to Break Silence

Director Martin Scorsese is gearing up to direct Silence for GK Films. Celebrated, Oscar-winning actors Daniel Day-Lewis and Benicio Del Toro are currently negotiating to star in the film, as is Gael Garcia Bernal. The project is scheduled to begin production in New Zealand later in the year.

The story will revolve around two Jesuit priests in the 17th century who are subjected to violence and persecution when they head to Japan in hopes of finding their mentor and spreading Christianity. The film is based on a novel authored by Shusaku Endo. Scorsese has been eyeing the project for over a decade. The film is being financed by GK's Graham King, a producer who worked with Scorsese previously on The Departed and The Aviator. Day-Lewis and Scorsese have collaborated twice in the past, with Gangs of New York and The Age of Innocence. This will be the first time Scorsese and Del Toro will work together.
