Mary J. Blige, Gucci Mane & Beth Ditto Deliver Fire In Top Songs Of The Week - April 7
Thu, 06 Apr 2017 13:23:46
At this time next week, tens of thousands of fans will be descending upon Indio, California for the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Meanwhile, artists not focused on one of the biggest music events of the year gave their attention to creating and releasing new material. Lucky for us, some of the industry's biggest names released hot new songs.
Gucci Mane teamed up with Rocko for the thunderous "Pardon Me", adding to his impressive post-prison catalog. Speaking of prison, Kevin Gates might currently be locked up, but that hasn't stopped him from unveiling "What If".
As the follow up to his GRAMMY Award for Best Remix, RAC teamed up with ex-Vampire Weekend member Rostam on his new track, "This Song". Beth Ditto, former lead singer of The Gossip, returned with her first single, "Fire", off her forthcoming debut solo album. Clearly it has been quite the week, and we haven't even mentioned the biggest release of the last seven days as of yet, scroll down to find out.
Here are our favorites:
Gucci Mane — "Pardon Me" [ft. Rocko]
Gucci released so much material last year that we would totally understand if he took a much deserved vacation, but the man clearly doesn't feel the same way. At the moment he is gearing up to release Drop Top Wizop, and this week delivered his collaboration with Rocko, "Pardon Me". On it, he delivers some of his hardest lyrics of the year to date: "A n---a so fly, that I should have been a pilot / I know a n----a rap, but I could have been a stylist / Feel like a jeweler 'cause I rock so many diamonds / Could never run for president, my past too violent."
Kevin Gates — "What If"
On "What If", Kevin Gates finds his inner Joan Osborne, singing, "What if God is one of us / Just a thug like one of us / Getting in out the mud like one of us / Making calls to the plug like one of us." We are all eagerly awaiting news on Gates' upcoming album, but will have to wait a little longer as his date of release from prison still has not been announced.
RAC — "This Song" [ft. Rostam]
When RAC picked up his golden gramophone for Best Remix, he became the first Portuguese artist to ever win a GRAMMY. The win has not slowed him down at all, which is evident on his new single "This Song". The Grammy-award winner paired up with Rostam, and the duo deliver a pastel-colored gem that is anything but ordinary.
Beth Ditto — Fire
It's been awhile since we've heard from The Gossip lead singer Beth Ditto, but, as it turns out, she has been hard at work on her debut solo album. This week she unveiled its first single, "Fire". It's the kind of retro rock ‘n' roll track that certainly packs a punch.
Mary J. Blige — "Love Yourself" [ft. Kanye West]
Mary J. Blige teamed up with Kanye West for "Love Yourself" off Blige's forthcoming record Strength of a Woman. The track finds two of the world's biggest artists performing at the top their game. Just listen.
