Maurice Jarre, the Oscar-winning composer of such famous films as Doctor Zhivago, A Passage to India and Lawrence of Arabia, has died of unknown causes in his California villa. He was 84.
"The world of film music is mourning one of its last great figures," Bernard Miyeta friend of Jarre’s and a leader of the French musicians’ guild SACEMsaid in a statement today. "As well as his talent, Maurice Jarre cultivated an eternal good nature, a way of living and a simplicity that became legendary."
"In choosing to work above all for the cinema ... Maurice Jarre broadened the public for symphonic music," French President Nicolas Sarkozy added in a separate statement. "He showed everyone that music is just as important as images for the beauty and success of a film."
Jarre was married four times and is survived by a daughter and two sons, including noted electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre.
