Me'Shell Ndegéocello will be collaborating with Jason Moran on May 13th and 14th at "The Fats Waller Dancy Party" Harlem Stage at Aaron Davis Hall in NYC. There will be two complete performances on each night, the first show beginning at 9 PM and the second show at 11 PM.
Accompanied by a full band, Ndegeocello and other artists will re-envision Fats Waller's historic music, offering contemporary interpretations using traditional instrumentation backed with house beats. Ten-time Grammy nominee Ndegeocello has followed creative urges throughout her career, and "The Fats Waller Dancy Party" should prove to be no exception.
Ndegeocello recently contributed the story "Gwendolyn Gone" to the It Gets Better project anthology of stories compiled by Dan Savage and Terry Miller. Meshell is one of the many writers, artists, activists who contributed an original essay to It Gets Better: Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying, and Creating a Life Worth Living. Created in effort to inspire and encourage hope for young LGBT people facing harassment, the It Gets Better book is currently on the New York Times bestseller list.
The singer is also happy to announce that she has just inked a deal with the French label Naïve Records. Featuring a widescreen roster that includes electronic, jazz and classical music, MN has found the perfect home for her diverse talents and is looking forward to promoting her next album with an enthusiastic partner.
Ndegeocello is currently recording with producer Joe Henry. The follow-up to her 2009 release Devil's Halo, the disc is being recorded at Henry's studio, and features Chris Bruce (guitar), Deantoni Parks (drums), Keefus Ciancia (keys), David Piltch (upright bass). This will be a vocal album for the singer and features all original material, and includes a collaboration with Benji Hughes. The record is tentatively due this Fall and has a working title of Dirty World. Some of the current song titles include "Chance," "Feeling For the Wall" and "Weather." The album title and song titles subject to change.
MN will now be performing the music of Prince on the East Coast, slated for June 15th at part of the first annual Blue Note Jazz Fest in NYC. In addition to "The Fats Waller Dancy Party" in NYC an aforementioned Prince show, Meshell has dates slotted this Summer, including the ones that follow:
- May 28th at the UCLA Jazz and Reggae Fest at Royce Hall, LA
- June 15th at the Highline Ballroom, NYC
- July 9th at Weeksville Heritage Center, Brooklyn
- July 23rd at Jazz A Juan, Antibes, France
- Sept 30th at One World Theater, Austin Texas
