Arguably, Mel Gibson is the world's most famous Catholic, eclipsing even the Pope in notoriety, thanks to his controversial film The Passion of the Christ. In recent years, however, Gibson has made headlines for directing left of center films, such as Apocalypto and for getting arrested while making questionable, un-PC comments. We're pleased to report that Gibson, who celebrated the '80s as an action hero hunk, is returning to the screen after a six-year absence. The actor has accepted a starring role in Edge of Darkness, his first big role since 2002. The last film that Gibson headlined was Signs.
The film will be directed by Martin Campbell who also lensed Casino Royale. Campbell also directed the six-hour, BBC mini-series on which the film is based, back in 1985. Apparently, Gibson was a fan of the mini-series and that prompted his decision to sign onto the Hollywood version. The plot is about a police investigator (Gibson) whose activist daughter is killed. He investigates her death and uncovers a web of corruption that lead to her demise. Welcome back, Mel! We've missed you.
