Miriam Makeba's publicist confirmed her passing to an Italian radio station on Monday, saying she died of a heart attack soon after a show near the town of Caserta. The South African singer was 76.
"I'm not yet absolutely certain of the causes of her passing," the publicist said, "But she has had arthritis—severe arthritis—for some time."
Makeba's concert at Castel Volturno was in support of Roberto Saviano, a writer responsible for the organized crime book Gomorra. Known in some circles as "Mama Africa," Makeba was the first South African star to break out internationally. As a result, she's viewed as an anti-apartheid icon.
