Mixtape Review: G Milla. "Inner City"
Fri, 02 Aug 2013 08:50:47
"I'm already dead," raps G Milla. on "Virgin Mary" the powerful and portentous opening of his phenomenal new mixtape, Inner City.
He certainly doesn't sound dead though. No, this Canadian MC is very much alive on the airy and sprawling "DMT", where vivid storytelling collides with warm atmospherics. Then, there's the psychedelic "Downtown", where G Milla.'s propulsive flow collides with Luu Breeze, yielding explosive chemistry. "DTF" and "Girls Girls" temper sexiness a la The Weeknd with fervent and fiery wordplay reminiscent of Nas. Everything bleeds into the spacey bliss of "Moon Shrine". It's chemically induced keys dip into his lyrical honesty with powerful results. He exclaims, "The world is over".
For all of the apocalyptic musings, G Milla.'s kicking off a new dawn for hip-hop. Crank one of the year's best mixtapes now.
