While we applaud Mo'Nique's performance in Precious and believe she has earned that Oscar nod and win thanks to her nasty, viscerl portrayal, it's as though nothing is safe when it comes to her personal life. She reveals all. We know she and her hubby Sidney have an open marriage. We know she doesn't shave her legs. We know she was molested as a little girl. Now, her brother Gerald Imes admitted to Oprah Winfrey on her eponymous talk show earlier this week that he repeatedly molested Mo' when she was seven-years-old and continued the practice for years.
The Best Supporting Actress Winner said she that the abuse that she endured at the hands of her brother was channeled into her performance in Precious. Bravo to Mo' for channeling her hurt into something productive and powerful.
"I'm sorry, Mo'Nique. I'm sorry," Imes said Monday on O Frey's show."I betrayed everybody's trust. I broke that trust. I broke that bond." In what can be best described as a smart move, Mo'Nique declined to be involved in Imes's interview or to respond to his apology. Her brother blamed his actions, which were conducted over a period of two years, on the fact that he had also been molested and he was masking his pain. He abused Mo' while he thought she was sleeping. But she wasn't.
Imes also said, "I started using cocaine, heroin, alcohol at the age of 11. I used these drugs to hide my own pain, to hide my own fears ... The drugs allowed me and afforded me the opportunity to hurt my sister." He then said he hid the shame he felt at having been sexually abused himself and took it out on his sister. Imes was eventually sentenced to 12 years in the slammer for molesting someone else, a female. He hopes to earn Mo'Nique's forgiveness, having said, "I can only hope by coming forth today ... that somewhere down the line ... we can come back together as siblings. I understand your pain. I truly think, let's share this together and move on."
Should Mo'Nique remain mum on her brother's apology?
