If you had a thing for Natalie Merchant's first album since leaving her longtime group 10,000 Maniacs, the 1995 multi-platinum selling album Tigerlily, you are not alone—Merchant really did too. Last summer, the singer-songwriter re-recorded its 11 songs using different arrangements, we’re told, “inspired by how they had evolved over time in the live setting.”
The reinvented album, Paradise Is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings, will be released on November 6 via Nonesuch Records. In support, next year in March, Merchant will embark on a limited-city tour and what’s more, as a companion piece, the singer has also announced a new documentary about the recording process, Paradise Is There, A Memoir by Natalie Merchant, The New Tigerlily Recordings.
It’s not surprising Tigerlily had the effect it did on both Merchant and her fans. Singles like “Wonder,” “Jealousy,” and “Carnival” still have massive airplay today, and the latter, in a dark request, was personally asked to be played at the wake of Aileen Wuornos (forever immortalized by Charlize Theron in Monster).
The film will be screened in special one-night only engagements at select cities throughout the fall, and, according to her website, “examines the impact of those songs and the role they have played in shaping not only the artist but her fans as well. Merchant's entire musical career is encapsulated in this very personal film, which delves into the music through live performances, archival footage, and interviews. Her fellow musicians, friends, and impassioned fans share how the songs of Tigerlily have influenced them over the past two decades.”
