NBC is creating a TV series based on the 1989 comedy Parenthood, which starred Steve Martin as the patriarch of a dysfunctional family. The network has greenlit a pilot which will be an hour-long dramedy with new characters and updated storylines about raising kids from the technologically plugged in generation.
This is the second time a series based on the film has been attempted. A short-lived sitcom that lasted for just a dozen episodes was produced in 1990 and starred Leonardo DiCaprio, David Arquette, and Thora Birch before they were stars. It has not been determined if 2009 Best Director Oscar nominee Ron Howard, who directed the theatrical version and still dabbles in the small screen, will be involved with the new series.
