Last week, electronic group Neon Indian (aka Alan Palomo) released its third album, VEGA INTL. Night School (Mom+Pop Music) to a sea of welcoming reviews. Pitchfork deemed it, "The most deluxe, comprehensive Neon Indian album yet," while Rolling Stone raved, "the most crystallized - and accessible - version of his aesthetic yet." Not too bad for a 27-year-old kid from Texas, but then again, Palomo's two other releases, 2009's Psychic Chasms and 2011's Era Extraña, were equally well received, tapping into the '80s reboot, much like contemporaries MGMT and Washed Out, with dreamy, hazy synth soundscapes.
Today, the group released a short film for the single, "Slumlord," titled Slumlord Rising. It has the feel of Slacker-era Richard Linklater, with a great, extended continuous opening shot, but it "delves into the seedy, and sometimes blood-soaked, Los Angeles nightlife world," reminiscent of a movie like Drive, with its hyper styled gangsters and hustlers, offering an ominous soundtrack, a la Cliff Martinez, to boot. It was co-directed by Palomo and Tim Nackashi. (Oh, and that ending!)
The vid coincides with a relaunch of Neon Indian's hotline number—1-512-643-VEGA—which was originally introduced back in August to tease the new material. Fans who dial it up "will hear a special greeting from Alan and be sent a preview gif of the video."
If you're looking for something to perk up your Tuesday, press play on this one. The group kicks off a small tour today. Dates below.
