Akron, OH rockers take the alternative we grew up on into the 21st century.
Red Sun Rising draw all the light back to rock 'n' roll music. They're in league with Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and A Perfect Circle in terms of that masterful balance between metallic energy and melody. The quartet is about to put its hometown of Akron, OH on the map in a big way for the first time since The Black Keys blasted out of there and became a critical fav.
That's how much of an impact they could have this year when their Razor & Tie debut Polyester Zeal drops. The group, comprised of singer and guitarist Mike Protich, guitarist Ryan Williams, guitarist Tyler Valendza, and bassist and vocalist Ricky Miller, teamed up with iconic producer Bob Marlette [Black Sabbath, Shinedown] for the album in Los Angeles, and everything about it feels massive.
Just listen, because the first single "The Otherside" offers an airy and anthemic gateway into their embrace. Protich can sound simultaneously soothing and haunting, often in the course of one verse, while the guitars echo like tumbleweed across the desert. Everything builds in calculated fashion into an unforgettable refrain punctuated by a wah-wah guitar harmony and distinct chug. The distortion takes on a life of its own, adding a different depth and remaining clear. The track is just starting to buzz at radio and has all the makings of a smash.
Now, for why this is important, because rock music really needs a new leader. If you look at the festival lineups or the charts, it's always the same pack of bands. There hasn't been a fresh group to emerge yet and really just vault right to the top on the strength of the songs. Now, Red Sun Rising have songs that good. Polyester Zeal could've been made back in the early nineties and it would hold up today. By the same token, it was made now, but it could actually stand up then too. This is everything the rock community has been begging for. Get behind them now.
