New Line hopes to relaunch one of the most successful horror franchises of the '80s and '90s by resurrecting razor-gloved, burn-scarred maniac Freddy Krueger and A Nightmare on Elm Street. The company has hired veteran writer and former rock critic Wesley Strick, who penned the Cape Fear remake as well as Batman Returns, to write the script. New Line hopes to restart the series, which was immensely popular and helped propel the career of director Wes Craven and establish him as a major horror master in 1984.
The new version of the film will retain the original's high school setting and will explore new nightmares. It will further plume the darkest recesses of the villain Krueger's mind, history, and psychology. New Line plans to release the film in conjunction with the original's 25th anniversary.
