It's classic Mimi, hitting the high notes.
Mariah Carey has shared her new song "Infinity," the only new track on her new retrospective album #1 To Infinity and it's classic Mimi, which means that the beloved pop diva (and, well, singer) is hitting all dem high notes within the parameters of soulful R&B.
#1 To Infinity takes a listen to eighteen of Maria's songs that hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, from "Vision of Love" in 1990, to 1995's "Fantasy" and "Heartbreaker" featuring Jay-Z in 1999, up to 2008's "Touch My Body."
"Infinity" is her best new song since "#Beautiful," that scorching duet with Miguel that reminded us of '90s-era Mariah Carey, when she was the top of her game.
"Infinity" is a romantic, slow 'n' sultry song about getting it on, where Carey doesn't so much suggest as much as she demands, in slinky, sexy, suggestive and alpha female way, to "Close the door / Lose the key." How could any man worth his salt deny her request, for lack of a better word?
While much has been made about Ariana Grande stepping into Carey's sky high Louboutins and usurping her pop music crown, this song reminds us that Mimi remains the diva of all divas. And the likes of the lovely and talented Grande certainly adore, respect and were influenced by Carey.
At the end of the song, Carey goes after—and hits—her signature high notes. Those are some glass-shattering octaves, but she reaches them without any cracks or tenuous deliveries. The notes are pretty perfect. Bring it, "Pitches."
We also love that it's just her on the track. No features. No distractions.
Is Mariah Carey back? She has our hearts, for "Infinity," and this song is a step in the right direction.
Mariah Carey's '#1 To Infinity' is released May 18th, 2015 on Sony Legacy Recordings.
