Nicolas Cage is going to prison and director John Carpenter is putting him there. Cage and Carpenter are in final negotiations to work together on Scared Straight, a prison thriller for Nu Image/Millennium Films.

The plot revolves around a young man shipped off to prison via the "Scared Straight" deterrent program, where teenagers are sent to jail for a short term in hopes of scaring them away from a life of crime and extended jail time. During the teen's stint in the slammer, a riot breaks out and he is taken hostage. Cage plays a longtime inmate who assists the boy during the melee.

The film was in development at New Line for some time before being dropped and subsequently picked up by Contrafilm, Emmett/Furla Films, and Nu Image/Millennium. Production is tentatively scheduled for October.
