The Academy Awards, or "Oscar" nominations came out this morning and three first-time nominees are up for best song. As some of the biggest names in music, Sam Smith, The Weeknd, and Lady Gaga are not new to award shows, it will be the first time any of them grace the Oscar stage. All three are nominated in the category of Best Original Song, which also includes J. Ralph and Antony ("Manta Ray," for Racing Extinction) as well as composer David Lang ("Simple Song #3", for Youth).
Sam Smith is nominated along with co-writer Jimmy Napes for "Writing's on the Wall" from the newest James Bond flick Spectre. The team look to double up on their film-related golden statues, having just taken home a Golden Globe for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture this past weekend. This marks the fifth Original Song Oscar nomination from the Bond franchise. In 2012, Adele took home the Oscar for Best Original Song with her Bond ballad, "Skyfall."
The actor was also very excited to hear about his nomination, at least judging from his instagram:
Fifty Shades of Grey earned an Oscar nod. It's for the Weeknd's "Earned It." Co-written with Stephan Moccio, Jason "DaHeala" Queeneville, and Ahmad Balshe, the song catapulted the Weeknd to his most successful year to date.
The Weeknd couldn't have been more astonished:
it can't get more surreal than this. thank you for the recognition @TheAcademy. truly a proud moment.— The Weeknd (@theweeknd) January 14, 2016
Lady Gaga is looking to pick up her second film-related golden statue of 2016 as well; she won for Best Performance by an Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film for her role as The Countess in American Horror Story: Hotel. Gaga teamed up with seven-time Oscar nominee Diane Warren for "Til it Happens to You" from the documentary Hunting Ground.
Lady Gaga thanked the Academy for recognizing such an important issue:
