Now that the Thanksgiving leftovers are almost gone, it's time to look back over a week that was bursting at the seams with belly-achingly good new songs. Paul Simon released a new record earlier this year, Stranger to Stranger, and this week he teamed up with two members of Chance the Rapper's default ensemble, The Social Experiment, to rework two of those tracks, "The Clock" and "The Werewolf", into one stellar song, "Stranger".
Danish indie rock duo The Raveonettes have been releasing a new track every month this year, and it's fitting that they may have saved their best for second to last, unveiling the yummy "Fast Food" just in time for the holidays. Speaking of the season, Popcaan got in the spirit by adding his own edition to the longtime dancehall holiday song tradition. And we all know Gucci Mane is already in spirit, since he is prepping the release of The Return of East Atlanta Santa, and he dropped another of its tracks "Drove U Crazy" [ft. Bryson Tiller]. And that was only the beginning for a week filled with stunning new tunes.
Here are our favorites:
Paul Simon - "Stranger" [ft. Nico Segal]
"The Werewolf" off Paul Simon most recent album, Stranger to Stranger, may have come a little earlier, but after last month's Presidential election, it couldn't seem more on point, "Life is a lottery, a lot of people lose / And the winners, the grinners, with money-colored eyes / Eat all the nuggets then they order extra fries," followed by the line, "The werewolf's coming". Teaming up with The Social Experiment just shows how wise and with the times Simon has always been.
The Raveonettes - "Fast Food"
The likes of McDonalds or Burger King might not always seem like the best meal for all of us, but few can deny that there are times when those tasty little treats are just what you need. The Raveonettes' "Fast Food" is a pretty thing, elegant and light like a figure skater, as it dances through galaxies filling your belly, even in the fullest of times.
Popcaan - "Christmas Gift"
It may be a surprise to some that dancehall has a long tradition of releasing of holiday songs, from Freddie McGregor's "O Come All Ye Faithful" or Lady Saw's "Rich Man For Christmas". Popcaan's "Christmas Gift" is certainly not a family song, but it does provide a certain type of joy for those of age.
Jenn Grant - Galaxies
The first single from Jenn Grant's upcoming LP, Promises, finds her singing over an almost piano ballad. Grant also opened up about her new album, "I also thought about my singing much more. I feel like I am a completely different artist from when I began performing. I don't feel like I really heard my own voice until recently. The delivery of songs has become so important to me. And for some of these new songs, I decided to approach singing more like a whisper, to try and get a feel for it's softness. I wanted to feel the power in that."
Gucci Mane - "Drove U Crazy" [ft. Bryson Tiller]
It's been very much the year of Gucci Mane, seeing the rapper come out of prison swinging and dropping a plethora of new material. His last offering of this year will be The Return of East Atlanta Santa, and this week he gave us a preview via his collaboration with Bryson Tiller, "Drove U Crazy".
