Lovestruck Angelenos were treated to opening night of The Decemberists's "A Short Fazed Hovel" tour in support of their most recent album, The Hazards of Love, on Tuesday night. The still freshly revamped Palladium got a taste of rock opera theatrics as the band tackled their conceptual Hazards across two-and-a-half hours and two sets of music, including a fifteen minute intermission. Aided by singers My Brightest Diamond and Lavender Diamond, who each contribute vocals to the record itself, there was an over abundance of musicianship onstage as marching drums pounded, accordions were squeezed and troupe leader Colin Meloy sang out fey tales of love and betrayal. The second set of the night even included a few crowd pleasers from albums past to satiate the sing-a-long needs of some in attendance. It was an impressive display of talent from a band that consistently manages to make overwrought sound completely reasonable.
