So, we've been asking this over and over again, but it's crucial! What would Freddy Krueger listen to?
"Nirvana, man, come on!" laughs Nightmare On Elm Street director Samuel Bayer. Well, the clawed villain would be more likely to crank In Utero than Nevermind, but Sam's convinced Freddy's iPod would run the gamut even beyond Kurt Cobain and Co. Freddy Krueger creeps back into theaters this Friday April 30, and there's all kinds of music that could accompany the beginning of his 21st century reign of terror.
The filmmaker goes on, "We play the Everly Brothers in the movie. I think [Freddy would listen to] anything with the word 'dream' in it. It could be 'Dream On' by Aerosmith or 'Dream a Little Dream.' He'd listen to anything with 'Dream' [Laughs]. He'd definitely have darker tastes. He'd be very eclectic—a little PJ Harvey and a little Tom Waits."
Now, Freddy's targets in Nightmare On Elm Street had an equally intriguing take on what Mr. Krueger would crank. Thomas Dekker chuckles, "He'd either listen to children's music box or Rammstein! It kind of sounds like him. Maybe if he was in with a glass of wine, he'd play Sinatra? He likes the Everly Brothers because they're in the movie."
Nevertheless, the cast of Nightmare on Elm Street—Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara, Thomas Dekker—and director Samuel Bayer shared their playlists with ARTISTdirect.com editor and Dolor author Rick Florino in this exclusive feature.
Check out their playlists here in the video and below and don't miss Nightmare this Friday!
Samuel Bayer's Playlist:
1. Guns N' Roses
3. Tom Waits
4. PJ Harvey
Samuel Bayer: "I would really upset a lot of people because I'm old school. It's Guns N' Roses, AC/DC, Tom Waits and PJ Harvey!"
Thomas Dekker's Playlist:
Thomas Dekker: "Coincidentally, we all use music. The iPod's a new tool. I was listening to other horror movie scores for this. I go through phrases where it'll be a month to two months of only listening to one artist, and then I won't listen to them for three years. Right now I'm in my massive Goldfrapp phase. I'm a big Goldfrapp fan. Her new album Headfirst is really good!"
Rooney Mara's Playlist:
2. Green Day
4. Thomas Dekker
5. Talking Heads
Rooney Mara: "I usually make different playlist for different scenes, characters and movies. I listened to a lot of Radiohead, some Green Day and Red. Right now in my car I have some Thomas Dekker, Talking Heads and Radiohead."
Kyle Gallner's Playlist:
2. Norma Jean
Kyle Gallner: Sam would make fun of us, "He'd be like Brando had a Nano!" I listened to a bunch of random stuff; it depended on what I was feeling that day. I was listening to easy listening but then I got back into a hardcore phase.
Thomas Dekker: "Aren't you always in a hardcore phase?"
Kyle Gallner: No dude I was like, 'T.I., what?!' I was listening to some Zao and Norma Jean at 5am driving to set the other day!
Thomas Dekker: "My alarm clock that woke me used to be Disturbed's 'Down with the Sickness'. It would get me out of bed that's for sure."
