On the heels of his historic visit to the new world (and the release of his first single, "Wake Up! Go! Go! Forward!"), Pope Francis, along with, somewhat ironically, his publicists at Girlie Action, has revealed the second single from his debut album, Wake Up! (Music Album with His Words and Prayers), titled, "¿Por Qué Sufren los Niños?." The song is streaming below, and the album, in wide release November 27, is availabe for pre-order via Believe Digital.
Whether you're a practicing Catholic, an adherent to another faith, or a God-smiting atheist, you have to admire the Holy Father's "out of the box" thinking here, in an effort to reach the masses, and, if all goes according to plan, redeem their eternal souls. Today's track, we're informed, "includes an excerpt of a speech given to youth at St. Thomas University in the Philippines, January 2015, wherein Pope Francis says: 'Why do children suffer? Only when our hearts can ask this question and weep, can we begin to understand'" and is "backed by a combination of acoustic guitar and evocative choir vocals."
The album includes songs in Italian, Spanish, English, and Portuguese, was produced "with assistance from various artists worldwide," and is "a diverse and poignant compilation of eleven tracks, which include reimagined hymns of the Christian tradition, [representing] a harmonic link between tradition and modernism...over an eclectic compilation of songs ranging from pop to rock, Latin music to Gregorian chants."
Addressing issues of "peace, dignity, and immigration," Wake Up! is shaping up to be an ambitious offering from a Pontiff "who has given the Catholic Church a new energy."
