Today, we're premiering Phil Cody's Featherbed, and happily so.
The EP is out via Back & Belly Recordings on August 7, but this is the "try it before you buy it" period.
Why do you NEED to listen and enjoy it? Sheesh. That's a softball question! Let Cody himself give you the reason you need to rock this.
"The Featherbed EP came about because it was time to get back on the horse, plain and simple," Cody told us. "Having retreated into the woodwork of domestic life for nigh on a decade, it had been way too long. So I rallied the old troops with the addition of Eric Heywood, and booked a weekend at my friend Rami Jaffee's studio in the Valley. With Steve McCormick producing, we set about laying down 'live' what best we could in two days.
In the end, we got 11 or 12 tracks. Some I'd been playing for a couple years, others were new ideas, traditional songs and a cover. After moving to Steve's studio on the west side and doing some cursory organization, the project was set aside, as I tended to other responsibilities and Steve undertook a renovation on his room. In the interim the Cody Sings Zevon project came about. It was recorded and released last November. Upon returning to the Featherbed sessions, I quickly concluded that about half the songs were working and the other half, for a variety of reasons, were not. Not so bad considering the loose game plan going in.
Now the decision was 'Do I re-record or record new songs to add to the collection or do I make the most of what's there and let it rest?' The songs seemed to demand their own document in time and time was passing. Once I hit on the idea of Featherbed as title and adding the reprise, the decision was clear. To honor the experience for what it was, with the best of what was there. A weekend with old friends reuniting and making music together. New songs would have to wait. The Featherbed EP was born."
Phil Cody will take Featherbed on tour this August throughout California, supporting Grammy Award-winning songwriter Marc Cohn, in addition to performing solo dates as well.
