Prince will be $4 million poorer and a perfume company that claims he defaulted on their agreement to promote a scent named after one of his albums will be $4 million richer for their troubles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Purple One will fork over $4 million to Revelations Perfume and Cosmetics for failing to promote its 3121 scent, of which he was a partner.
The deal stipulated that Revelations would sell a fragrance based on the album and Universal Publishing Group would receive 50 percent of the perfume profits… provided that Prince promoted the perfume. Easy enough, right? Eh, not really.
Revelations claims the musician defaulted on his obligations, refusing interviews and live events, neglecting to hand out promotional samples at concerts, in addition to dismissing requests for his image to appear on the packaging.
The company filed a lawsuit in 2008 after perfume sales didn't meet the agreed minimum. Prince's lawyers said he informed the perfumer that he wouldn't do what was being asked of him and therefore shouldn't be responsible for their financial losses. Hah! It doesn't work that way, Prince. Love you and all, but...
The Purple One's lawyer stated, "This was a default judgment, not based on any trial on the merits and without any ability of Prince to challenge the factual assertions of the plaintiff. The Judge's refusal to set aside the default for good cause is currently being appealed. Every 'fact' in the Judge's opinion was an adoption of the assertions made by the plaintiff due to said default judgment and are vehemently denied by Prince."
