Two members of the Russian punk band/art troupe Pussy Riot have been freed from prison under an amnesty agreement declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Maria Alekhina and Nadya Tolokonnikova were freed Monday, December 23, and both were immediately defiant of the ruling, with Alekhina quoted in the Washington Post: “If I had a chance to turn it down, I would have done it, no doubt about that,” she told Dozhd TV. “This is not an amnesty. This is a hoax and a PR move.”

Tolokonnikova said “I’m calling for a boycott of the Olympic Games. What is happening today — releasing people just a few months before their term expires — is a cosmetic measure.”

The band members (including the previously released Yekaterina Samutsevich) were arrested after performing 40 seconds of an anti-Putin song in 2012, and as the plight of the band came to light, musicians, labels and free-speech activists started the 'Free Pussy Riot' movement.
