Ut oh. R. Kelly was set to headline the Fashion Meets Music Festival in Columbus, Ohio next month, but the R&B star has left the bill due to protests. He has a murky past.
FMMF will still proceed as planned, with out Kelly on the bill. The event spans the full Labor Day Weekend (Friday, August 29 through Sunday, August 31) in Columbus, Ohio's Arena District.
Local bands Damn the Witch Siren and Saintseneca, along with several sponsors, pulled out of planned appearances and nixed their support due to Kelly's appearance on the bill. Kelly had been accused of having sex with a minor and videoing it in 2002.
Festival spokesperson Melissa Dickson told The Columbus Dispatch, "We wanted to make sure we heard the Columbus listeners... to make a statement and support the city we live in."
Dickson also said, "The motto of FMMF is 'Three Days, Two Loves, One Place' and we recognized that the 'One Place' needed to be heard. Our artist lineup remains strong and we can't wait to kick things off next month."
Kelly's publicist also issued a prepared statement, which read: "R. Kelly is sorry to disappoint his fans but looks forward to seeing them in the near future during one of his upcoming tours."
Everyone is being VERY diplomatic about this drama, understandably so.
