Rage Against The Machine have something planned for June 1st, according to the mysterious countdown website, http://prophetsofrage.com/, they launched last night. The website has a box where curious visitors can enter their email address. In return they'll receive a cryptic message reading, "Clear the way for the prophets of rage," a lyric from Public Enemy's "Prophets of Rage" (off of 1988's It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back). The spartan website also sports the hashtag, "#takethepowerback," which is also the name of a Rage Against The Machine song from their self-titled album; the one that features an album cover of a monk set on fire. The website prominently features a new logo-like image of public dissent that's been cropping up around L.A.
Whatever's in the works, Public Enemy's Chuck D appears to be in on it. Last night he tweeted links to a video of Rage Against The Machine performing live at London's Finsbury Park in 2010.
It's been awhile since we've heard any new music from Rage Against The Machine, the band's last studio album, Renegades, an album of covers, was released back in 2000. Since then, the band went on hiatus, only to reunite in 2007 for a headlining performance at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The band continued to tour steadily until 2011, when the band's members ostensibly took time off, again, to pursue individual endeavors.
In 2014, Rage's Zach de la Rocha appeared on Run The Jewels' "Close Your Eyes (And Count To F***)".
