A sly funkified bass thump from Flea kicks off Red Hot Chili Peppers' first single from I'm With You, "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie".

Flea's bass wizardry continues to be a hallmark of the band's sound as does drummer Chad Smith's calculated jazzy stomp. The rhythm on the tune is pure funk rock genius, just like Chili Peppers' earliest and wildest material. However, there's an uncontainable and undeniable energy that makes "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" feel like it actually came back in time from the future. How many artists with legacies this long and impressive can muster that?

The band has never been one to ride the zeitgeist's wave; instead they cause it. Guitarist Josh Klinghoffer steps in with a subtle gleaming melody before launching into fret-burning fireworks. He infuses a modern psychedelic edge, while incorporating a little blues, alternative, and of course funk. Singer Anthony Kiedis relays a vivid story of the song's titular character that feels like a Pulp Fiction all its own. Kiedis fires off a smooth syncopated verse before carrying one of the most entrancing and engaging refrains of his incredible career. The hook sails off to the heavens on Kiedis' cadence.

As a writer, his genius truly shows through on "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie", painting a vivid portrait that's simultaneously otherworldly and captivating. "We've got to make it rain somehow", he croons. That rain signals a new beginning for one of the greatest bands in history, and they've given the world another classic.

"Rain Dance Maggie" also proudly stands along other timeless Chili Peppers characters like "Sir Psycho Sexy" and "Venice Queen". You wonder about who she is and where she came from. However, you really just want to dance with her and Red Hot Chili Peppers until the end of time…
