Listen to the hardcore punk and heavy metal crossover sound of "Bitterfrost."
Philly's technical metal pioneers Starkweather have reissued their classic underground albums Crossbearer (1992) and Into the Wire (1995) as a deluxe, 2xCD package via Translation Loss Records.
If you were a fan of underground, extreme metal in the 1990s, well, you were well-acquainted with Starkweather and you had good taste, like this writer!
These watershed records have been remastered and repackaged along with plenty of long out-of-print material; the end result is a teeming testament to the Philadelphia band that both pioneered the hardcore punk heavy metal crossover sound and influenced many current and beloved extreme metal bands, including The Dillinger Escape Plan, Isis and Converge.
In honor of these two classic, definitive releases, we're sharing one of the songs from the package in the form of "Bitterfrost." It is truly brain-numbing, astonishingly technical metal. You won't know what hit you once you have a listen to "Bitterfrost." But it's not heavy for the sake of being heavy nor does it bash you over the head with its abrasiveness. This is not a sonic sandpaper enema. Instead, it's a song that is a true exercise in dynamics and how something so murderously heavy can also be insanely artistic.
But the good thing about this track is that it's cathartic. It'll get the red out.
Are you ready?
We hope you were able to withstand to pummeling yet artful aggression of Starkweather and "Bitterfrost."
The double-album reissue by Starkweather is avaialble now via Translation Loss Records.
