Republic Records Chairman and CEO Monte Lipman, '86, and President and COO Avery Lipman, '88, returned to their alma mater, the University at Albany, to deliver the commencement address at the 169th ceremony this past Sunday, May 19. More than 13,000 attendees, including 2,250 new graduates, congregated on the school's Entry Plaza lawn for the undergraduate commencement ceremony at which the esteemed alumni spoke.
The duo, who are the figureheads and leaders at one of the most successful labels in existence today, are visionaries and luminaries in the music industry, so this crop of graduates was particularly lucky to have the Brothers Lipman speak and offer their sage-like advice and to impart their wisdom.
The Lipmans opened the address by acknowledging the University's President, Dr. Robert J. Jones, and his background as a former member of the platinum, two-time Grammy Award-winning vocal and instrumental group Sounds of Blackness. "It warms our heart(s) to know the school is run by a music man," Monte exclaimed.
They continued by encouraging the graduates to pursue their passion and find success through tenacity and belief in themselves. Avery concluded the speech with a poignant statement: "If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life." Amen to that! That's a piece of advice that everyone who reads this site should take into account and apply to their lives.
The Lipmans remain the music industry's most prescient duo. Preserving an independent entrepreneurial spirit within the framework of a major label, they've built a company that's always ten steps ahead, and they're continuing to lead and flourish by evolving with the tides of industry change. They're setting the pace, and that's an inspiring thing for graduates and everybody else out there.
The Lipman address was followed by a special surprise performance by Cassadee Pope, winner of Season 3 of The Voice.
