Rihanna came away with the Michael Jackson Vanguard award, at last night's MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs). After performing four times—medleys encompassing her entire discography—Drake presented the singer with her award, "She's someone I've been in love with since I was 22 years old… She's one of my best friends in the world."

Meanwhile Rihanna's speech focussed on her gratitude to her fans, country, her team, friends, Drake, and the hosts, MTV. "My success, it started as my dream, but now my success is not my own—it's my family's, it's my fans', it's the Caribbean as a whole, it's women, it's black women."

Britney Spears turned heads with a return to form with her first appearance at the VMA's since 2007. The pop star performed her single, "Make Me" with G-Eazy, taken from her new album Glory.

Kanye West took to the stage to address the world in regard to his view on art and merchants. The rapper compared himself to Walt Disney and Steve Jobs. He poked fun at the time he grabbed Taylor Swift's microphone in 2009 and used his stage time to hint that Swift knew about the line "that b*tch" in his song, "Famous." He then premiered his new music video for "Fade."

Arguably it was Beyoncé who stole the show with an unexpected performance of several hits from her album Lemonade. The album scored the singer no less than eight awards, including Video of the Year for "Formation". Earlier in the evening Beyonce walked the red carpet with several women featured in the Lemonade visual album, among those women were mothers of victims of gun violence.
