Rock Album of the Year: Mastodon "Once More 'Round the Sun"

Mastodon step up their game every time they enter the studio.
Rock 'n' roll follows too. How many bands out there have followed in the footsteps of Atlanta's lumbering behemoth in the past decade? They're arguably the most important band to emerge this century. Their influence and impact speaks for itself. Crack the Skye and Leviathan already landed in the canon of timeless records. However, Once More 'Round the Sun belongs firmly alongside them as well.
"Tread Lightly" ignites this trip into the heart of darkness with an acoustic intro that bleeds into the curling distortion of the refrain. "The Motherload" strikes gold as the group's most unshakable anthem yet.
At the same time, there's a poignant and powerful poetry to the words, emanating true longing. "Chimes At Midnight" and "Once More 'Round the Sun" volley between mind-bending instrumental intricacy and massive choruses that illuminate the group's marked progression as songwriters. At the same time, "The High Road" lands a walloping one-two punch that could satiate even the most "Old School" of Mastodon fans.
"Halloween" and "Aunt Lisa" emanate rock gusto at its most unabashed, unbridled, and undeniable. Everything culminates on the chilling "Diamond in the Witch House". Once again utilizing the vocal talents of the legendary Scott Kelly of Neurosis, it opens up yet another gateway into pure epic territory. Mastodon elevated the playing field here, and undoubtedly countless others will follow. However, rock music is their playing field now, and they're its champions.
