Actress Rose McGowan caused a bit of stir, saying that she would have joined the Irish Republican Army had she been living in Belfast during The Troubles, while promoting her film Fifty Dead Men Walking. The actress went on to say, "my heart broke for the cause" and stated that while violence isn't always the best way to solve conflict, she could understand why people embraced it during that time period. Author Martin McGartland, the man whose autobiography the film is based upon, was critical of McGowan's comments, saying that her words insulted victims of IRA terrorism and she owes them an apology.
The film's producers have distanced themselves from the actress and her controversial comments, insisting that they are her own private opinions and are neither shared nor endorsed by the film or those behind it, which also features Ben Kingsley in the cast. McGowan has remained mum in the wake of her polemicizing.
