Rostam Batmanglij has just left Vampire Weekend. The backup and sometimes lead vocalist, guitarist, and all-around instrumentalist made the announcement via Twitter this morning. He stated, "my identity as a songwriter + producer, I realized, needs to stand on its own." The band has not released an album since 2013's Modern Vampires of the City.
Though Batmanglij may not have been as well-known as Ezra Koenig, he played an important role in shaping the band both musically and lyrically. Outside of Vampire Weekend, Batmanglij has kept himself busy, acting as a producer for Charli XCX on "Need Ur Love," Carly Rae Jepsen on "Warm Blood," and Ra Ra Riot on "Water," as well as contributing work to soundtracks.
A little over a week ago, Rostam released his newest solo single, "EOS." Back in 2011, he released two stand alone singles, "Wood" and "Don't Let it Get to You." There has been no announcement about a forthcoming album as of yet.
The band has been playing together for a decade, and it seems that Batmanglij just wants to pursue his own unique voice. Good news for Vampire Weekend fans is that he is not cutting ties with the band and there seems to be no bad blood between him and his former bandmates. He stated he will, "continue to collaborate on future projects + future VW songs."
