Russell Simmons, co-founder of Def Jam, will host the "I Am a Muslim Too" rally in New York's Time Square this Sunday. He will be joined by hosts Rabbi Marc Schneier (president of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding) and Imam Shamsi Ali (of the Jamaica Muslim Center). Speaking at the event will be Linda Sarsour, Amani Al-Khatahtbeh, and more, which is being held in solidarity with those affected by the Trump Administration's ban over immigrants from seven different countries with majority Muslim populations, which is currently known as the "Muslim Ban." It'll run from midday until 4 p.m.
Simmons issued a press release saying, "Everyone except white privileged males are in immediate danger. African Americans, women, Latinos, Asians and LGBTQ are all at risk, but there is no freedom in that privileged status either because the spirit of the oppressor is oppressed as well. We are living in a time when unity will make America great. This is a special moment for all Americans of good will to band together to promote the kind of compassion and equality for others that we want for ourselves."
Recently, Simmons has been working on a hip hop musical entitled The Scenario, which will see its New York City premiere during the 2017-18 season. Following its debut, the production will tour 30 cities. The Scenario will be produced by Scott Prisand and Jamie Bendell, who previously worked on Rock of Ages. The book for The Scenario is being penned by Dan Charnas, author of the rap history volume The Big Payback.
