Second Spin: Aerosmith – “Music from Another Dimension!”

Now, we’ve been listening to Aerosmith’s Music from Another Dimension! since it first dropped back in 2012, and it gets better with every subsequent spin. The same could be said for every classic Aerosmith record though. The songs are so tight and well-crafted that they each take on a life of their own. You automatically feel that with Pump, Rocks, Toys in the Attic, Get a Grip, etc. However, it’s also the pervasive feeling on Music from Another Dimension!. In honor of Aerosmith rolling around North America on the “Let Rock Rule” tour with Slash this summer, we decided to take it for a “Second Spin”, and we encourage that you all do the same as soon as humanly possible.
After an ominous B-movie reminiscent sample, “Luv Xxx” delivers a pulse-pounding and heavy groove courtesy of Joe Perry and Brad Whitford’s inimitable dual guitar volley. Tom Hamilton locks down a deliberately tough bass groove as Tyler sings, “Goodbye” with a futuristic twang. Upholding that sonic backdrop, Joey Kramer pounds out a big and bombastic bounce. It’s an epic opener to an equally epic album. Whether it’s the sunny blues swagger of “Oh Yeah” where Tyler adds his signature spark to Perry’s lyrics or the elegantly heavy “Beautiful” where gritty guitars dance with vocal fire, it brandishes that indefinable magic present within their most revered output. Other times, they get down and dirty on the raucous and punk-y “Street Jesus”. However, “Freedom Fighter” remains a standout. It’s got a background vocal cameo from none other than Johnny Depp, while Perry takes the mic while churning out one of his most towering riffs ever. It also takes a political stance calling to support freedom fighters everywhere, giving another dynamic to the record.
Elsewhere, Carrie Underwood delivers a spirited cameo to “Can’t Stop Lovin’ You” a “Don’t Want To Miss a Thing”-size ballad. However, it’s the rockers that still fuel this train, and that’s what makes Music from Another Dimension! so essential within their catalog.
Everybody cries about the death of rock ‘n’ roll. However, Aerosmith give its heart a big jolt of energy on this record and live every night. Take it for another ride we know you’ll love it. Don’t miss “Let Rock Rule” this summer either.
