See the Music: Adrenaline Mob – "Undaunted"
Tue, 20 Mar 2012 15:02:05
Adrenaline Mob, the supergroup featuring former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy and Symphony X vocalist Russell Allen, sat down with ARTISTdirect.com for this exclusive "See the Music" segment. Portnoy, largely viewed as one of the best stick handlers there is, spoke about the song "Undaunted" from the band's debut album Omerta, giving us the inside scoop on the tune's genesis, but not before he discussed what he and Allen were going for with this project. In a sentence: They wanted to do something unexpected.
Portnoy says this project is "all about the grooves and the riffs." The end result is different than the fans would have expected, which, as he says, "would have been Dream Theater and Symphony X colliding."
The skinsman says that all along, he and Allen knew they were a match and had the ability to go beyond the prog world in which they both have trafficked for so long and to much success. Nothing wrong with flexing new creative muscles so they don't atrophy.
All in all, the drummer is happy that they are branching out and doing something full of the aforementioned riffs and grooves.
He shared that the demos for "Undaunted" were the first thing he heard and they grabbed him because they had that "bounce."
