Gibson's limited edition "robot guitar" is set to go on sale in stores worldwide tomorrow. Four thousand copies of the Les Paul Silverburst (with a spiffy blue finish) will be available for $2,499 in the U.S., with an optional Powertune add-on going for $900. The world's first self-tuning technology uses a processor and six distinct motors to recognize pitch and tighten the guitar's strings.
The Silverburst ships with six presets, but can remember a person's playing style with the help of a microphone. Budget-minded users can also find Powertune online for as low as $800 and apply it to many other guitar models without leaving a mark. (The auto-tune technology has been available through its developer, German company Tronical Gmbh, since March.)
"Robots are very popular in Japan," Yasuhiko Iwanade, the president of Gibson Guitar Corp. Japan, told the Associated Press. "So this is something that matches the developments here these days. It's a technology that Japanese can understand."
