Shakira will be performing at the World Cup closing ceremony and the organizing committee claims that the Sunday, July 11 show at Soccer City will be a high-tech event, according to the Associated Press.
While the opening ceremony was more traditionally African, which is where the tournaments have been held, the closing show will be much more modern. Organizing committee spokesman Jermaine Craig said the event will be "more youthful and a bit more technologically advanced" than the June 11 opening ceremony. Craig also said the nighttime event has "nice lighting effects and special effects planned." While that's not a lot of info, it certainly has me interested – certainly more than the games themselves. Who wants to watch one goal games where referees can make calls on the field without justifying them?
The closing ceremony is scheduled to start at 6:30 PM local time, two hours before the final match kicks off.
Shakira will perform the official tournament anthem "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)." Shakira also performed the song at a June 10 World Cup concert in Soweto.
