Singer George Michael has died aged 53. The star, who rose to fame as principal songwriter and singer for Wham! in the 1980s later saw success as a solo performer, with a string of hits that cemented his position as a pop superstar of global renown. In a statement issued by the artist's publicist it was said that George Michael "Passed away peacefully at home".
Police confirmed that South Central Ambulance Service were called to a property in Goring, Oxfordshire, UK early on Christmas day afternoon. There were no suspicious circumstances. Through his career, the singer who was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, sold more than 100 million albums in a career that spanned almost four decades.
In a statement, the star's publicist said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage."
In 2011 the singer postponed a number of concerts after suffering from pneumonia. After treatments in a Vienna hospital he made an appearance outside his London home, speaking with the press and his fans, in a tearful address in which he admitted it had been 'touch and go' whether he survived.
It was just earlier this month it was announced that producer and songwriter Naughty Boy was working with Michael on a new album.
