Skin, lead singer of British rock band Skunk Anansie, looks at the title of the band's new album, Anarchytecture, as a discussion of the current turmoil in the UK and a comment on the need for a new societal structure. As a black woman fronting a metal band, others have always been confused about what she is doing. However, it doesn't matter to her. The ability to be an individual and to be yourself is what makes her and her nation distinct.
In August, Skunk Anansie will head to Brooklyn for the Afropunk festival. To Skin it feels like an opportunity for the unique to stand together, "I think it's going to be full of really freaky people who do really freaky things and I'm not gonna seem like the alien for a f***ing change."
ARTISTdirect's Christopher Friedmann caught up with Skin to discuss the structure of the new album, the current turmoil in Britain due to Brexit, and what it means to her to be a black, female metal singer:
