Skylar Grey "Dance Without You" Review – 5 out of 5 stars

On her solo single "Dance Without You", Skylar Grey formally opens up the door to her world.
With a vivid, vibrant writing style, she's the mind behind Eminem and Rihanna's "Love the Way You Lie", and her voice can be heard loud and clear on hits from Dr. Dre and Lupe Fiasco. However, nothing quite compares to "Dance Without You". The song is dangerous, divine pop music. Think a combination between Fiona Apple's smoky soul and Portishead's otherworldly trip hop and you're only halfway there. Grey is the most entrancing frontwoman since Beth Gibbons, and she's going to take pop to another realm.
"Dance Without You" slinks from an electro-tribal stomp into a hypnotic hook that's unforgettable and undeniable. Grey's voice emerges from the haze of synth and guitar swells angelically, reaching monolithic heights. The song's lyrics are hauntingly gorgeous as Grey pleads, "I break my neck to be polite". The track exudes a noir-style David Lynch sense of dark elegance, and it's bound to make you think and sing along.
If this is any indication, her forthcoming full-length INVINSIBLE is bound to be one of the best albums of 2011. Welcome to Skylar's world. Welcome to the future.
