Soldiers of Fortune has been called a supergroup, and they are that, comprised of a rotating crew of some of indie rock's finest. These days the lineup includes: Brad Truax (Interpol), Kid Millions (Man Forever, Oneida), Barry London (Oneida), Matt Sweeney (Superwolf, Chavez), Jesper Eklow (Endless Boogie), guitarist Mike Bones, and Papa Crazee (Oneida).

But they're something else too, maybe even the resurrection of indie rock, long considered dead since that cover story in Paste. The band's second album, Early Risers, due November 6 through Mexican Summer Records, could be a game changer. Tracks like opener "Nails" reel with the spitfire traction of rockers Eagles of Death Metal, but the album's overall quirky, lo-fi approach doesn't take itself as seriously as a group like that, what with its slick production aesthetic and killer looks to match.

Nope, these are just a bunch of grubby, possibly stoned, positively shredding dudes who know how to dial it in. Plus, they have the good sense to know how to plug in all the pieces, inviting glam-slack rocker Stephen Malkmus (Pavement), shoegazey moper Cass McCombs, and a host of other vocalists along on tracks that sound custom made for its respective singer (that's Malkmus on "Campus Swagger" and McCombs on "Old Roman Wall").

If you miss the days when indie rocked and had fun at the same time, get a load of these guys. Early Risers is available for pre-order now on iTunes, Amazon, or via Mexica Summer. Also, if you're in NYC, you can catch S.O.F. at the free album release party at Max Fish on Wednesday, November 4.
