Southern California's finest alternative outfit delivers a Make Yourself-worthy track.
Incubus take Song of the Month with "Trust Fall." The title track from the Southern California alternative quintet's forthcoming Trust Fall (Side A) EP, out May 12 via Island Records, yields six minutes of rock bliss. It's as if the group channeled the wondrous warmth of Make Yourself through in a dash of S.C.I.E.N.C.E.-style energy and mixed it up with the scope of Light Grenades. At the same time, there's a marked evolution here as the boys stretch boundaries with an expansive roller coaster of a track punctuated by psychedelically swooning textures and bombastic guitars. In essence, it's a return-to-form and a progression all at once. That's rare from any band. However, given their instrumental prowess and vision, Incubus actually pull it off with "Trust Fall."
The group—Brandon Boyd [lead vocals], Mike Einziger [lead guitar, piano], Jose Antonio Pasillas II [drums], Chris "DJ" Kilmore [turntables, keys], and Ben Kenney [bass]—spring to life on the song. The track boasts some of Einziger's most formidable fretwork before giving way into an undeniable refrain from Boyd, "It's just a trust fall." The lyrics remain both visual and evocative. It's a timeless jam that's heavy, heartfelt, and hypnotic.
It's been four years since the group's last full-length If Not Now, When?, and the musical landscape has continued to immensely change by the day. The music itself just keeps getting better for Incubus, and "Trust Fall" is emblematic of that.
