MGK just unleashed his brand new single “A Little More” featuring Victoria Monet. It’s literally hot off the press, and it’s truly powerful. He came hard after the raucous “Till I Die” with a track that rages against the machine with heartfelt elegance both lyrically and musically. The production is a calculated R&B-based beat, while he trades the signature light speed cadence for a pronounced, potent, and powerful delivery. It’s not like he slowed down, but it’s like he loaded up. The man behind Lace Up isn’t afraid to admit, “I had a dream that the world changed,” but we get the same old Kells in the sly lines such as, “Instead of presidents and old sayings, I heard lyrics from Kurt Cobain.”
He tackles the song with that grunge openness and an arena rock handle on melody, while Victoria Monet colors the song with neo-soul flare. You immediately feel the soaring and soulful hook, and it fits snugly between MGK’s bars.
In many ways, it’s like the best and most pensive moments from Lace Up take the center stage here. That unbridled honesty from “See My Tears” is on full display with the screeching plea from “Save Me.” We get that “End of the Road” poignancy unchained as MGK progresses to the next plateau altogether.
“A Little More” is our song of the month because it sees one of our favorite artists confidently reach for new heights. This is the biggest sign post pointing to MGK’s album being one of the most important of 2015.
