Song of the Week: Ghost "Cirice"

Swedish rock saviors weave a sweetly satanic hymn to herald the arrival of their third full-length Meliora
Ghost possess Song of the Week with "Cirice," the first sliver to be unveiled from their forthcoming new album, Meliora [Loma Vista Recordings], out August 21. Straight out of Sweden, Papa Emeritus III and his nameless ghouls confidently drive forward yet again after 2013's landmark Infestissumam. Vocals more entrancing than a séance carry "Cirice," while the guitars bless the track with a doomy bliss. Keyboards punctuate with cinematic expanse, and everything culminates on a swooning melody bolstered by searing soloing. It's as elegant, entrancing, and enigmatic as rock 'n' roll gets. It's Ghost at their best.
What's so striking about "Cirice" is its ability to make the heavy moments so singable. You walk away humming along, which is something that not even most modern pop bands can pop too. At the same time, the delivery of "Can you hear the rumble?" remains bone chillingly beautiful. Then, there's the recently released music video. Now, Ghost aren't any strangers to mind-blowing visuals, but this raises the bar. Shot like a grainy seventies flick with a dash of Dario Argento, the clip sees a school talent show transform into something else altogether. We won't ruin it, because it's that much fun.
Rock music doesn't have this kind of edge anymore. Ghost make things dangerous again. You feel like you shouldn't be listening to "Cirice," but you can't stop anyway. Evil has never been so good. Get ready for Meliora to haunt you, in the best way possible, forever.
