The first track with the new singer from UK metal stalwarts, see how it stacks up...
Asking Alexandria unveil their first music with new singer Denis Stoff (full name Denis Shaforostov [ex-Make Me Famous]) on the track "I Won't Give In," and it immediately stands out. The gold-selling, chart-topping, and arena-packing UK metal group—Ben Bruce [lead guitar, keyboards, programming], James Cassells [drums], Cameron Liddell [rhythm guiar], and Sam Bettley [bass]—burst out of the gate with a definitive track that embodies the spirit of their seminal work so far from Stand Up and Scream [Sumerian Records] and Reckless & Relentless, while confidently soldiering forwarding into new territory. These are guys who could tour on Mayhem or Warped and that versatility shines tenfold.
What's cool is that Asking Alexandria simply picked up where they left off. "I Won't Give In" combines a hum of industrial-tinged electronics with a swooning vocal, "I watch you slip away. You're slowly killing yourself. I won't give in." Then the stomp of gnashing guitars that fans initially fell in love with ramps back up in tandem with a crushing drum beat. As everything cascades together, it yields the group's most anthemic track yet. This one was meant for arenas, and it will be sung back to them by crowds night after night at full volume.
In many ways, "I Won't Give In" embodies the band's ethos at the moment and like AC/DC, Alice In Chains, and others who embarked on a new phase with a different singer, they're breaking the mold. It shouldn't be a surprise though. That's what these gentlemen have always done.
