New single from modern rock's finest is one of their biggest and best anthems.
Listen to Shinedown's new single "Cut The Cord" and it quickly dispels any of those pesky, pervasive mainstream opinions that, "Rock is dead," which we're constantly bombarded with. The Jacksonville quartet—Brent Smith [vocals], Barry Kerch [drums], Zach Myers [guitar], and Eric Bass [bass]—deliver a robust, raucous, and real anthem that lands a knockout punch. Following up 2012's gold-certified Amaryllis, which debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200, the boys return with a banger that's equally heavy and hypnotic. Moreover, everybody gets the spotlight.
Kerch hits hard, carrying the propulsive backbeat with impenetrable power. Meanwhile, Bass's rhythmic wallop remains just as thick and tough, while Myers serves up a muscular riff that's as hummable as the hook. Surrounded by an eerie choir, Smith sounds both authoritative and artfully angry demanding, "Cut the cord." Like all great rock songs, you won't be able to shake it after one listen. It also serves as a perfect crossroads between the spirited stomp of The Sound of Madness and the epic expanse of Amaryllis.
In the industry and press, we continually hear that "nobody cares about rock music," but this kickass music video has already racked up a ton of views and excitement is palpable for the band's next album. This music is meant to break the mold and shift perspectives. It's not meant to stagnate and pander the way pop and other genres do. Shinedown continue to progress, while maintaining everything fans loved about them in the first place. "Cut The Cord" is a declaration that they're as powerful and relevant as ever. Rock lives because of them.
