Sony "is expected to end its working relationship" with Dr. Luke, The Wrap has reported. However, a legal representative for the producer said in a statement to EW, "This is not true. Luke has an excellent relationship with Sony. His representatives are in regular contact with executives at the highest levels at Sony and this has never come up."
Last month, Kesha was denied an injunction by a a New York State Supreme Court Judge that would have released her from Dr. Luke's Sony-affiliated Kemosabe Records. The singer claims that Dr. Luke assaulted, drugged, raped, and abused her for years. Since then, there has been a flood of industry support for Kesha, and The Wrap reports that individuals familiar with Sony's upper level management told them, "There is no contest. Kesha has no case in regards to her contract but they can't afford the Adeles of the world out in the streets calling the label unsupportive. The fact that this hasn't already been taken care of with Luke is confusing, especially for people in the building."
Sony's contract with Dr. Luke is not supposed to come to an end for another year. The Wrap went on to report, "It's currently unknown how Sony intends to free itself from the relationship, a decision that would fall on CEO Doug Morris and his boss, Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton. Any unilateral dissolution of the contract would be a direct breach, so a negotiated exit would be most likely to save face on both sides."For more on Kesha, check out:
